Michael, the base is fine modellers grit with a few bits of slate chippings thrown in. It is painted with Burnt Umber ink and then drybrushed with Foundry Base Sand A, B and C. Look on the "Labels" list and find "Basing Tutorial". Click on this and you'll see how it is done.
